How to Make Hummus – Quick and Easy Campervan Recipe

How to make hummus

How Easy is Hummus to Make?

We were amazed at how very easy hummus is to make when we first tried it. We had been spending years buying it from the supermarket without considering how to make it from scratch. It also inevitably comes in plastic which we are really trying to cut down on.

Living full time in a campervan really allows you to slow down and start to enjoy everyday tasks a bit more. Cooking used to be a bit of a chore after coming home after work everyday- now we love it and really look forward to trying new recipes. That’s where looking at making home made hummus came in….A simple hummus recipe only has 5 ingredients- that’s it! You can also add extra flavours in to jazz it up too- we will list some that we have tried and have been super tasty at the end of this blog.

How do you Make Hummus from Scratch?

Ingredients

  • 400g tin of drained chickpeas (1 can)
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic paste (or 1 garlic clove)
  • 2 tablespoons of tahini
  • 1 large squirt of lemon juice (or use juice from 1 lemon)
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

You may want to add 1- 2 tablespoons of water to make it looser depending on your preference! (We do)

Method (using a NUTRiBULLET blender- other options below)

  1. Add all the ingredients into the blender
  2. Blend for 1 minute, shake and repeat a few times until the mixture is smooth

 That’s it!

Top Tip: You can mix it up by using a tin of black beans instead of chick peas- it makes the hummus darker and richer.

What Blender do we Use in our Campervan

We use the Nutri Bullet 600 series blender and love it. It comes with 1 large tub (great for making chickpea burgers) 1 small tub (for hummus), 2 lids (for keeping everything fresh and secure and a couple of cookbooks. It works really well on the inverter and makes lightwork of hummus, burgers and smoothies.

How to Make Hummus without a Blender

There are a couple of options depending on what implements / utensils you have in your campervan.

Option 1: Use a clever device called a pull string blender / chopper. The ingredients and method are exactly the same as above but you just use the pull string to mash it up. We used this all the time before getting an inverter and still do if we are running low on power.

The pull string blender we use is here: Brieftons QuickPull Blender.

Option 2: Use a masher or fork. This is the most labour intensive option and will take a while but it still works! Again the ingredients and method are the same just use a bit of elbow grease to get it nice a smooth!

Optional Ingredients to add in for Flavoured Hummus

  • Pesto (3-4 teaspoons)
  • Paprika (2-3 teaspoons)
  • Roasted red peppers (280ml jar)
  • Avocado (use half a ripe avocado)
  • Chipotle (Use 1-2 teaspoons of chipotle paste depending on how spicy you like it!)
  • Olives (4 tablespoons of olive tapenade)
  • Sundried tomatos (1/4 cup)
  • Beetroot (2 tablespoons of pureed Beet)
